It is that time of year when all of the networks are doing there fall and winter finales. I will try to do a wrap up of all of the shows I watch on different days.
Enjoying the fourth season of HOMELAND. Next Sunday is the finale, and I am looking forward to it. There have been many good twists and turns, and the end of each show make you want it to be the following week five minutes later. I hope that they do a fifth season, and I hope that they bring the cast back stateside. Pakistan has been an interesting backdrop, but the idea of the station cheif doing field work and disregarding her subordinate agents has been a little of a stretch.
BOARDWALK EMPIRE had a good ending. Although most of the major characters died, they tied up the story lines pretty well.
NEWSROOM - This also had a good series finale. I was sorry to see one of the major characters go, but I enjoy the connective story that went through the entire season.
THE AFFAIR - I am just two episodes in on this show so far. The different points of view of the same story has een interesting and I am looking forward to see where this goes. Weird seeing the crazy lady from LUTHER playing a emotionally damaged waitress and wife. Dominic West is playing the same character he always seems to.
REVENGE - Was wondering what they were going to do when they brought David Clarke back, and so far it has been good. She be fun to see what he and Emily can do together. Not sure the direction following the fall finale (Daniel's demise) but it should be fun.
CSI - Storyline and characters are still good. They have a new background baddie this season, and the episodes so far involving that have been good. Definitely eager to find out how this shakes out.
I have not started the second season of RESURRECTION and I have only watched the premiere episode of ONCE UPON A TIME. Planning to catch up on these two over the holiday break.
This is a blog about the shows and movies that I watch and the books and comic books that I read.

Some new shows
I have enjoyed a few good new shows this TV season.
HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER is an excellent crime show. It is the third of the Shoda Rhimes shows, and it is as good as the other two.
FOREVER is about a guy who is a medical examiner of New York, but he is also immortal. It so far has had goot front stories, and has had a good connective backstory as well.
STATE OF AFFAIRS is solid, but I am still undecided. Katherine Heigl is alright as a CIA agent, but the stroy is a little slow so far. I am still giving it a chance.
CONSTANTINE - I am just two episodes in but I am enjoying it so far. I hope that NBC gives it a chance. I think it can bring in some of the more mystical characters of the DC Universe.
GOTHAM - This is so far my favorite new show. Characters are great, and they chose the actors well. The new character, Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett Smith, is devilishly brilliant. I am looking forward to the Arkham storyline that will begin when it returns.
MADAM SECRETARY - As someone who has a background in political science, I am enjoyinng this show. Like FOREVER, it has both good front and back stories. Enjoying Tea Leoni as the Secretary, and it is good to see Tim Daly on TV again. He is good at playing her husband. The kids story line is a little week, and the only one that is even interesting to watch is the anarchist son.
THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA - I was uncertain about Debra Messing doing drama, but she is good in this. They surrounded her with a good cast, and put in just enough comedy with her character to keep me watching episodes.

Catching up
Over the weekend, I caught up on RESURRECTION. The first season was on Hulu still and was only 8 episodes, so it was not difficult. It is about a boy that reported returns from the dead after 32 and is brought back to his parents from China by an ICE agent, played by Omar Epps. The first season was good, and had a good storyline, and a good cliffhanger. The second season starts on Sunday, September 28th.
Also finished AN HONORABLE WOMAN. I think that this series will get some Emmy nominations. One of Maggie Gyllenhall's best performances of her career. Great miniseries story. I will not give away any spoilers for this show. As soon as it becomes available on ON DEMAND or online, I suggest you binge watch all eight episodes...
Another show that I am beginning to catch up on is MANHATTAN. It is about the Manhattan project. Good story so far, but the acting is just ok. They are doing well to bring in historical figures, but it is taking a while to get anywhere in the show. I am guessing a lot will happen in the last couple of episode of the series. I have not heard about a second season yet for this show.
RAY DONOVAN's second season is even better than the first season. I am half way through the ninth episode, and I am anticipating a very good season finally that will happen next Sunday.
I am also enjoy the fifth and last season of BOARDWALK EMPIRE. They have jumped forward to 1931. Al Capone is firmly in control of Chicago, and Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano are quietly beginning their takeover of New York. Nucky is attempting to go legit, and has begun a friendship so far with Joseph Kennedy. Can't wait to see what else happens this season.

Movies from this past weekend
First movie of the weekend was WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES. It reminded me of one of the 70's thrillers, but was set in the mid and late 90's. Liam Neeson is good, as was the actor who played TJ. The villians are adequate, and very creepy.
THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU is a good family movie. The patriarch of the family dies, and the mother (Jane Fonda) forces her kids (Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Corey Stoll, and Adam Driver) to sit shiva, saying that it was there father's dying wish. Hilarity ensues with them and the people connected to them.
Also sat and watched POINT BREAK just because it was on cable.

Beginning of Fall Schedule (SPOiLER ALERT)
Last night was the first night of the new Fall schedule. It was good out of the gate with MADAM SECRETARY. Tea Leoni, who is also a producer on the show, is very good. Tim Daly is good as her husband, but I beleive that his character is not really what he seems. I think that he was also part of the company, but that hasn't been given to us viewers. There is a good backstory going on that I think will be slowly revealed throughout the season.
Next up for me, was two episodes of BIG BANG THEORY. Sheldon is in Arizona, and has been robbed along his journey. Penny gets a new job, and Sheldon is promoted when he goes back and has to teach a class which Wolowitz decides to take. You will have to watch it to get more information.
SCORPION is another new show. It is about a group of super geniuses that are recruited by Homeland Security to solve a problem at LAX. There is a software guy, a psychologist, a mechanical prodigy and a human calculator. To round out the team is a waitress who will help them relate to the outside world, while they help here to connect with her genius 9-year old son.
The last show of the evening is the season premiere of THE BLACKLIST. Red is being hunted by trackers hired by Berlin, and the main Blacklister tonight is Lord Baltimore. Only twenty minutes into the episode as I am typing this so I will need to do an edit of this post at a later time. They also just showed a teaser trailer for STATE OF AFFAIRS starring Katherine Heigl. More later.

SUNDANCE CHANNEL
I am really enjoying two shows from the SUNDANCE Channel. The first is RECTIFY (http://www.sundance.tv/series/rectify). It is set in the south and is about a man who is released from prison after 19 years, but is not exonerated of the crime. It is about him trying to re-acclimate himself into his old town, when everyone still thinks that he committed the murder. I am part way through the first season.
The other show is AN HONORABLE WOMAN (http://www.sundance.tv/series/the-honorable-woman). This is an eight episode mini-series that is set in London, but really talks about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and how outside forces are affecting that. Well acted, well written, well shot. all around just great. Looking forward to the finale next Thursday.
I taped THE RED ROAD (http://www.sundance.tv/series/the-red-road) a few months ago but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Great Documentary
I have been watching a lot of documentaries ( which I will talk about in a different entry) recently and have really fallen in love with this art of filmmaking. Today, I watched one about Roger Ebert (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/magnolia/lifeitself/) that I think is one of the best produced in recent memory. It brought back a flood of memories of my teens and early twenties, tuning in every weekend to watch Roger and Gene Siskel battle back and forth about what they thought about the movies. The fostered my love of movies whether I agreed with them or not. As a viewer, I could see their love or disdain for the movies that they were watching. I truly hope that this film receives at the very least a nomination next awards season, and in my opinion should win the Academy Award. For anyone who has a love of movies, I "strong"ly recommend this film...

Sunday
Went to the LA Times FESTIVAL OF BOOKS today. Bought six books and three graphic novels, in an effort to support independent presses and individual self publishing authors. Looking forward to reading those.
Came home and watched episode 2 of GAME OF THRONES. This episode was awesome. Peter Dinklage is amazing as Tyrion. Can't say that enough. Good subplot building in this one. SPOILER!!!!!!! Goodbye Joffrey, you will not be missed.
Followed this by watching the premiere of YEARS OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY (http://yearsoflivingdangerously.com/) which is about climate change. There were three stories. First was with Harrison Ford, who traveled to Indonesia to look at the issues with the harvesting of palm oil, and the taking down of the rain forest in order to do so. The second was with Don Cheadle going to Texas to look at a town that was severely affected but drought and the subsequent closure of the meat packing plant stemming from that. The third was with Thomas Friedman and his investigation of a story of how the drought in Syria and the displacement of a million people there has affected the revolution in that county. Very well made series. Next week has a continuation of the Harrison Ford story, and the start of one with Arnold Schwarzenegger about wildfires...Will write more during the week.

READING
Currently reading a lot of books at the moment. I have started KING AND MAXWELL by David Baldacci, INSURGENT by Veronica Roth, IRISH AMERICANS by Jay Dolan, PLASTIC OCEAN, and the first prequel to I, ROBOT. Taking public transit has also allowed me to finish a lot of books recent. I finished THE LOST HERO by Rick Riordan, DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth, and BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR by Jeffrey Archer. I thought the filmmakers for DIVERGENT adapted the book very well, and it was one of the closer adaptation that I have seen in a while.
Also spend a lot of time reading comic books. The new MAGNETO comic is the best I have read in a while. The story line for INHUMAN was good, and the premiere issue was good, and I am hoping that they continue a good path. We shall see.
I have enjoyed this FOREVER EVIL storyline, and can't yet figure out how they are going to end it. Should find out in a couple of weeks. I continue to try to find good independent comics. FATALE continues to be weel written, and I love LAZARUS. Also like how all of the Zenoscope titles are tying together nicely...

Movies
Saw two movies this weekend, CAPTIAN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER and SABOTAGE. CAPTAIN AMERICA was amazing. Great story, Great Special effects. Robert Redford was back to ld form, and Chris Evans is coming in to his own in that character. Looking forward to AVENGERS next summer. During the movie, saw the trailer for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and am definitely looking forward to that in August.
The other movie I saw was SABOTAGE. Arnie and his band of television stars forms a pretty good team, but the story was just ok. Was disappointed at the end. Glad I saw it at the cheap matinee at AMC. During the next week, I am going to try to watch the documentary about Donald Rumsfeld. The trailer got me interested. It is made by the guy who made FOG OF WAR. Next week will also probably see DRAFT DAY.

First post in a while
Typing this as I am watching the premiere episode of SILICON VALLEY. Just finished watching the fourth season premiere of GAME OF THRONES. Truly amazing. Looking forward to this coming season. The Lannisters are firmly in charge of King's Landing at the moment, but things are starting to brew under the surface. Definitely need to read the books as well. Arya was the true star this evening. Hoping the Starks will make a resurgence this season...
The other premiere I am looking forward to tonight is TURN on AMC. It is about the Culper Ring that is created by George Washington as the first spy organization.
Also will watch COMIC BOOK MEN this evening.

A New Post for the New Year
As I sit here watching my Seahawks win to go to the Super Bowl, I figured I would write a little on the blog. Watched a lot of movies and TV this weekend.
Friday - Saw JACK RYAN (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/paramount/jackryanshadowrecruit/) . I thought that Chris Pine held his own against the others that have played that character. Undecided about Keira Knightley in the movie, but like Kevin Costner in the the mentor role. When I got home, I watched BONES. Was reminiscent of SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN, and was was a good episode.
Saturday - Saw three movies on this day. Started the day with LONE SURVIVOR (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/lonesurvivor/). Good war movies, well shot and well acted. Definitely will purchase and read the book. One of the seals in the movies also has a documentary about him, that just became available on I-Tunes. I may check that one out as well. Followed this movie with INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/insidellewyndavis/). I liked the folk music, but i did not feel sorry for Oscar Isaac's character at all. He was a jerk. Followed this with a couple of documentaries at home. The first was DIRTY WARS (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/ifcfilms/dirtywars/) . It was a documentary about the secret war that the US government is waging using JSOC in countries that we do not have a conflict in. I had heard rumbling about this in the news and online, but had no clue that it was as widespread as this documentary showed. Ended the evening with 20 FEET FROM STARDOM (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/twentyfeetfromstardom/). This is a documentary that talked about backup singers. These people, mostly ladies, had been on many of the biggest songs in the past 50 years. Very well made, and I would recommend it to everyone.
Sunday - Watched HAWAII FIVE-O, two episodes of DRACULA and BITTEN today. Between DRACULA and BITTEN, I went to go and see PHILOMENA(http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/weinstein/philomena/). Very good movie. Felt very sorry for the lady. Judi Dench and Steve Coogan were both very good. BITTEN is a new show based on the Kelley Armstrong books. First episode was good enough to get me to watch a second episode. Following the football game tonight, planing to watch the season premiere of THE FOLLOWING. Have to go to sleep early tonight so I will need to watch DOWNTON ABBEY and the season 3 premiere of SHERLOCK.
I will try to write more during the week about what I have thought of TV shows so far this season.
